The Folk Lore Society of Victoria was formed in August, 1955, to collect the old bush songs and ballads, and to study and spread knowledge of all aspects of Australian folk lore. It was an amateur body and all collecting was done in members' spare time and at their own expense. Up to 1963 most work had been done in Melbourne, the Ballarat district, Gippsland, and north and north-eastern Victoria. In addition to folk songs and bush ballads, members had collected descriptions of pioneering days, recitations and yarns and country dances. To popularise traditional songs and dances, public performances were put on regularly. The Society worked in close co-operation with historical societies in country districts and had received great help from organisations in allied fields - notably the Shiplovers' Society of Victoria, who arranged for its recordings of the late Captain H. Watson. | ![]() Maryjean Officer |
| The Folk Lore Society ceased operation many years ago. Members went on to form the Folklore Council of Australia (now also defunct) and the Victorian Folk Music Club which is now the longest running folk organisation in Victoria. | ||
